Baia Mare metropolitan area
Baia Mare Urban System or Baia Mare Metropolitan Area is an unincorporated entity, formed by association under a Convention in 2006, signed between the city of Baia Mare and nine neighboring localities (towns and communes), for economic, social and environment development. Each locality maintains its administrative autonomy.〔("Metropolitan area – a new model of local government" ), ''National School of Political Studies and Public Administration''〕
For the 2014-2020 period, Baia Mare Metropolitan Area is slated to be an important instrument for accessing EU structural funds, which will enable the implementation of local infrastructure investment projects, thereby increasing the quality of life and reducing disparities between localities.〔(Baia Mare Metropolitan Area – section ''About us'' )〕
At 1 October 2011 the population and housing census put the population of the area at 215,932 inhabitants, with the city proper having 123,738 residents according to the 2011 census.〔("THE 2011 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS" )〕

Baia Mare Metropolitan Area includes a territory with an area of 1395.38 km² (22.2% of the Maramureș County), on which are found the county's specific landforms (mountainous area – Gutâi Mountains; lowland and hilly area – Baia Mare), hydrographic network consisting of Someș River and its tributaries (Lăpuș and Săsar rivers).
